Sarah and Victor Lytvinenko form Raleigh Denim, a local (OK, Raleigh-based) company using mostly local materials including locally manufactured denim (Cone Mills, to be exact). They’re making waves worldwide, despite their mission to revitalize the North Carolina garment industry.

You can buy Raleigh Denim at Niche Market on Camden, whose blog pointed me to the above video produced by David Huppert for UNC-TV.

I would love to support this company and am all about made in the US, but $200 for a pair of jeans is a little out of my budget.

Me too, but I also think we’re a little spoiled by unethically outsourced labor, so the true fair cost of the clothing we’re used to is a little nebulous.

What really makes these jeans worth $200? How did they come up with this price? I guess I won’t be supporting this company. Can’t afford it.

awesome find! I don’t wear $200 jeans but the people that have that kind of spending money are the ones I want putting money into companies with revitalizing the NC textile infrastructure in mind! Wish I had a pair of their jeans though, still! :)

Kim, they do make jeans for women. And CLT Blog, you’re about 1 year late on this story. People from Raleigh have known about Raleigh Denim for quite awhile. Raleigh Denim has had a contract with Barney’s New York for several seasons now. $200 is steep, I admit, but are you really paying that much less for other designer brands at stores like Neimans, Nordstroms, etc…? Last time I checked, designer jeans cost at least $150175, and I for one would be willing to pay the extra cash to support a local company. Not to mention that Victor is about the coolest guy ever… he leads the First Friday art gallery bike tour every month in Raleigh.

Nice find. Good vid. That’s my hometown, Being in the industry myself i’m surprised I haven’t heard of them. Lets take into consideration high quality selvage denim produced in the states is $20 to $25 a yard. It takes 3 yards for a pair of jeans. I would conclude that $200 is reasonable for handmade USA Selvage Denim product. Also considering they hired a pattern maker thats been in the games since the beginning, 14+ full time employees on staff, marketing budgets, factory space, tags, retail markup etc etc etc the list goes on. Burton Approved. Thumbs up for authenticity.
