Google Wave

Posted on 1 Oct 2009 by Justin Ruckman

Google launched its Wave application today to the first 100,000 users, a product hyped to reinvent email and online communication. It’s only in beta for now, but make no mistake as to the service’s refinement: this is a company that just a few months ago took Gmail, the third most popular webmail service in the world, out of beta.

That’s not to say it doesn’t have its flaws though. (Scrolling, for instance, seems sometimes painfully slow.) But its real-time rich communication abilities are fascinating. Watching the people you’re talking with type their responses letter by letter completely changes the traditional “instant message” dynamic. Not to mention the ability to easily insert videos, photos, maps and a variety of other objects directly into the conversation.

Haven’t been following the news? Check out this guide by Mashable, and the official overview from the Google Wave team themselves, including an 80-minute video product demo.

Wave is only as fun as the people you talk to though, so I’m curious who all in Charlotte has a Wave account? I know we’re considering using Wave as a tool for CLT Blog contributers to collaborate through, once enough people have access.

Leave your wave addresses in the comments so we can find each other. For now, I’m [email protected] (haha), but that’s just the account they activated first. I’ll move into something more permanent eventually.

Also, if you have invites to share, or are looking for some, drop a line here, maybe we can all help each other out.

I thought I signed up early enough to be in line for an invite, but apparently there were at least 100,000 other people ahead of me. Sooo, if you happen to have any to spare, it would be much appreciated.

Cheers, and keep up the good work.

If you’re requesting an invite from people, you should leave an email address. :-)

I don’t personally have any invites, but others will, especially once the invitees of inviters start getting their accounts.

Gah! Curse our twice weekly publication cycle! I’m working on a Google Wave write up now.

I didn’t get in, so I’m collecting as much anecdotal evidence as I can. Anyone else in besides Justin? [lucky! /napoleon voice)]
