Story Slam is both a series of unique performances opening in Charlotte for the next unspecified number of weeks, and the Plaza-Midwood space they’ll be shown in. It’s an effort led by Mark Woods, Randell Haynes, Debbie Fitts, and the New River Dramatists, an NC-based theatrical writing think tank.

I had the chance to stop by about a month ago to check out the space in in development, and talk with Mark on camera about the concept and its future. I’m curious to see how things have evolved.

Mark explained that a central component to this project is it’s interaction and involvement with the audience and community. A list of prospective plays was posted on their website a month ago for people to vote on, which influenced tonight’s premiere. This pattern will continue throughout the series. Him and the others see the place as a “front porch for the community”, and hope to create a relaxing, reflective environment that supports vibrant discussion and debate among performers and participants alike. The pieces being performed here are, after all, fresh and cutting edge — something that around these parts anyway, can be hard to come by.

It all starts tonight at 7pm in their newly commissioned space on Central Ave. It runs tomorrow night as well, and will continue running Friday and Saturday nights until the series is finished. Tickets are $12 in advance online and $14 at the door. Tonight’s performance is Going After Alice by Megan Mostyn-Brown.

I think I would like that guy.

    And speaking of original stories…

    I’m a whore.
