Just because summer is over doesn’t mean that vacation time has to end. Fall weekend getaways and day trips are a great way to spend fun, quality time with loved ones and explore new things.

So what’s a great destination for those in Charlotte looking for a weekend outing? Surry County! Convenient to Charlotte, Surry is just a short ride down the road. Dobson, Elkin, Mount Airy, and Pilot Mountain are the towns that make up Surry and each have their own appeal for vacationers.

Surry is a great place to go for wine lovers! The region is home to over 30 wineries and vineyards, many of them award-winning. Each offers their own tastings and tours for visitors looking to explore all that our celebrated Yadkin Valley wines have to offer.

For those who love the outdoors, Surry County is an ideal place to visit. There’s hiking and biking along miles of trails with unmatched views of pristine rivers, rolling foothills and stunning vistas of the Blue Ridge Mountains, not to mention, fishing, kayaking, canoeing, horseback riding and golfing, just to name a few. Head to Pilot Mountain for some excellent hiking, try the trails and see some unforgettable views.

Surry is also home to some great festivals. Make sure you don’t miss the 16th annual Yadkin Valley Pumpkin Festival in Historic Elkin on September 22! This great festival brings in nearly 15,000 visitors to Elkin every year and features live entertainment, shopping, great food, and gigantic pumpkins galore. Pumpkin Weigh-In and Events start under the Hugh Chatham Bridge at 9am.

Mount Airy, known as “America’s Hometown”, will host its 23rd annual Mayberry Days Festival, a four-day celebration of yesteryear that will take place September 2730. Mayberry Days encompasses a variety of events such as great live music, a Mayberry Days Parade, checkers tournament, championship barbecue cook-off, games and activities for the kids and a guarantee of a whole lot of fun.

The upcoming 46th annual Autumn Leaves Festival is another event sure to please the entire family. Held October 1214 in downtown Mount Airy, this popular event is all about music, craftsmanship and fun. There will be more than 250 craftsmen demonstrating their skills alongside nationally renowned musicians playing bluegrass, old-time and gospel music.

The 7th annual Harvest Festival will be held in Dobson at Shelton Vineyards on October 1314. There will be something for everything to enjoy! Listen to bluegrass music, take a hayride through the vineyard, let the kids get their faces painted, and sip a glass of your favorite Shelton wine during a free tasting or take a complimentary tour of the winery.
