I’m going to leave the debate around the NASCAR Hall of Fame and government overspending behind for just a moment. Because for all the pros and cons, in the end it is a remarkable effort, and a beautiful building.

Following are some of the more interesting facts learned today, and a ton of excellent photos taken by James Willamor.

  • The NASCAR Hall of Fame announced today that their grand opening will be May 11, 2010. This places it, of course, right in the middle of the big race at LMS and Speed Street uptown.
  • The 1st NASCAR stock race was today, 50 years ago, in 1949
  • A curving track wraps the perimeter of the 2nd level inside, which banks up to 33 degrees and can hold up to 18 cars.
  • The HoF’s collection totals nearly 1,000 historic items, 200 of which are in storage for future exhibitions.
  • Interactive kiosks will be throughout the facility for self guided tours, you can login on their website from home to review what you’ve seen and compare your visit with others.
  • The state-of-the-art theater, in addition to its everyday use, may be used on occasion to stream live video from races.
  • A pit stop challenge will give people the chance to try, hands on, the feat of changing 4 tires and filling a tank of gas in 1213 seconds.
  • The driving simulator can run on all the major speedways, and has “extremely realistic steering”.
