Kickstart “The Heroes Doc”

Posted on 16 Jul 2012 by Matthew Tyndall

San Diego Comic-Con International wrapped up last night; the largest comic book convention in the United States. Most people dont know that Charlotte host the longest running and one of the largest independent comic book conventions in the US. Heroes Convention, founded by Shelton Drum, has been a Charlotte institution since 1982. About 400 people attended the first convention; compare that to the over 400 professional comic book writers and artists who were guests of the convention this year along with the thousands of fans who visited.

The Heroes Doc is an eleven month chronicle of what goes on behind the scenes of the 30th Anniversary Heroes Convention. Heroes Aren’t Hard to Find (Shelton’s store) was the setting of all of the events leading up to the convention in June. The Pop Swap, the Mini-Con, Free Comic Book Day, as well as many more special events will be seen in the documentary. We have interviewed most of the store staff; as well as, local comic book professionals Dustin Harbin, Jason Latour, and Bridgit Scheide — one a former store employee, another a current employee. We also sat down to interview, Marvel Architect, Matt Fraction, who worked at Heroes Aren’t Hard to Find before breaking into the comics industry.

We are really close to our goal to make this documentary into a reality. We also have some really sweet rewards for the people who back our project on Kickstarter. We still have ONE (and only one) lifetime Heroes pass, hand written “thank you” cards from Matt Fraction, commissions from local artist John Hairston and the chance to Superhero yourself courtesy of Bridget Scheide. Feel free to tell your friends about the rare rewards you can only get by supporting our Kickstarter.
