Hornet’s Nest, a film to be released on TNT in 2012, is set in Charlotte, but filmed in Wilmington

Per TV by the Numbers:

TNT has greenlit an original movie adaptation of the chart-topping bestseller Hornet’s Nest, a novel by America’s #1 crime novelist, Patricia Cornwell, whose works have sold more than 100 million copies worldwide. Sherry Stringfield (ER) and Virginia Madsen (Sideways) have been cast to star in Hornet’s Nest, which will premiere next spring as part of the TNT Mystery Movie Night, the network’s new showcase of movies adapted from contemporary crime novels. Robbie Amell (Picture This), Michael Boatman (The Good Wife) and Michael Silver (ER) are also set to star in the movie.”

Pretty cool. I’m always interested to see how Charlotte is perceived and portrayed by the media, and in rarer cases, the entertainment industry.

The story is crime mystery/thriller, involving a serial killer that specializes in out-of-town businessmen. One of the characters in the novel is Andy Brazil, a local reporter assigned to cover the CMPD. I wonder if he’s a member of the local SPJ.

Patricia Cornwell is originally from this area, and after graduating from Davidson College in 1979, wrote for the Charlotte Observer, at one point covering the police beat.

Anyway, despite other (cough) productions calling Charlotte home, this one is setting up shop in Wilmington. Close enough to easily grab footage here as needed, but located in a town with proven infrastructure to cheaply produce television and film.

Proven infrastructure to cheaply produce television and film” — as in Wilmington has it and Charlotte doesn’t? Say what? Charlotte does indeed have a proven infrastructure to inexpensively OR expensively produce long-format programming and films. Charlotte also has a long and very interesting history of doing just that. It’s maybe just a bit more complicated and nuanced as to why they’re shooting most of this in Wilmington … !?! –
