Gantt-Watt weekend comes to Charlotte this Saturday

Posted on 14 Sep 2011 by Sam Spencer

The Young Democrats of North Carolina and the Young Democrats of Mecklenburg County are pleased to announce a star-studded Gantt-Watt Weekend September 1617. The Gantt-Watt Weekend is named for former Mayor Harvey Gantt and Congressman Mel Watt, and honors the contributions of African-American leaders and Charlotteans to the State of North Carolina. It’s also a great weekend to get involved — many former Gantt-Watt sponsors and honorees are now part of the team making the DNC Convention a reality.

At 7:00 PM on Friday, State Treasurer Janet Cowell will headline our Skyline Networking event at The VUE Charlotte, 215 N. Pine St. As the state’s fiscal advisor, Treasurer Cowell oversees more than $74 billion in pension fund investments, affecting more than 850,000 public employees including teachers, firefighters and other government employees.

This event is a great opportunity for young professionals to meet statewide Democratic leaders, local candidates, elected officials, and others who will be participating in the 2012 Convention. The event is free for Democrats under 36, with a suggested contribution of $25 for allies, candidates, and elected officials. RSVP on Facebook or to Food will be provided; catering by Charlotte Catering & Events.

At 7:00 PM on Saturday, Former Mayor Harvey Gantt, Congressman Mel Watt, Mayor Anthony Foxx, and Executive Vice President Colmon Elridge of the Young Democrats of America will be the special guests at the Third Annual Gantt-Watt Reception at Aquavina Restaurant.

Early Bird tickets for Young Democrats are only $35; all proceeds benefit the Young Democrats of North Carolina. Tickets and sponsorships can be purchased online at

I wish we had our black schools so we would not have to be taught by people who share your sentiment.….Black people must do something for ourselves!

Shame that the black Democrats didn’t unite behind Ken Lewis and DEMAND that the Party work harder to make him US Senator. He was endorsed by both of these leaders. Oh — that’s right. The virtually ignored Gantt but turned out in record numbers for John Edwards (sigh).

I guess Kay Hagan’s pocketbook was WIDE open.
