Nikolas Schiller: kaleidoscopic Charlotte

Posted on 21 Oct 2008 by Justin Ruckman

Nikolas Schiller is a digital artist and cartographer. He’s 28 and lives in Washington, DC. These pictures of Charlotte are just the beginning of the immense body of work he’s produced, sampling satellite photography around the world and making some incredibly complex, beautiful, trippy geo-industrial artwork.

You can see the rest of his Charlotte and Raleigh work here, or start at his website proper for the full collection.

Thanks Justin! I currently have a 32″ x 48″ stretched canvas print of Charlotte Spheres (above) on my wall right now. I displayed it earlier this year at an event called Artomatic. I even made an artsy YouTube video that shows the map above being zoomed into in reverse-slow motion. If any of your readers are interested in purchasing the map, it will make a great addition to any downtown home or office.

Awesome, I’ll embed that video here:

What kind of prints do you make of Charlotte Spheres? How much do they cost, and where could we buy them?

I have about 150 maps of cities around the United States available at my Imagekind On-Line Store. I do not have any Charlotte available for sale at this time, but I can probably add the maps. I am slowly moving away from the on-line store because I would rather have more control over how they are currently printed. Currently you can purchase the maps from the on-line store for on paper or canvas up to 60″ x 40″ in size and have up to 30″ x 20″ prints custom framed. They are under $100 dollars on the cheapest paper at the largest size. The first edition map of the Charlotte Spheres was for sale at Artomatic for $500 and it’s a 48″ x 32″ gallery wrap canvas print. I still have the original packing materials and can ship the first edition print to a lucky individual in Charlotte. The map belongs in Charlotte more than my wall :-)
