How to make money online, zero budget film making, iPhone app development, organizing social media, and how to make balloon animals were some of the sessions at Saturday’s BarCamp Charlotte 2. The un-conference allowed any attendee to pitch an idea for a session. Attendees then voted on the sessions they would like to see. The event was held again at Area Fifteen, located between Uptown and NoDa, where Charlotte’s first BarCamp was held in January.

Drummers, singers, fire dancers, and a comedy troupe entertained a large crowd of BarCamp 2 pre-party attendees at Parkwood Green. Counter Culture Coffee was on hand to provide free coffee drinks. The location hopes to be the future home of Not Just Coffee coffeehouse, and plans were on display as well. Photography by Bryan and Jennifer Shields was on display next door at the roofless building. The pre-party took place Friday evening, and BarCamp 2 took place at Area Fifteen on Saturday. Photos from BarCamp to be posted soon.

BarCamp kick-off

bclogo

The second BarCamp Charlotte kicks off this morning at Area Fifteen in Charlotte. If you have never heard of BarCamp, here’s the skinny from the website:

BarCamp is an international network of user generated conferences – open, participatory workshop-events, whose content is provided by participants. The first BarCamps focused on early-stage web applications, and related open source technologies, social protocols, and open data formats.

In layman’s terms the format is this: At the beginning of BarCamp those who wish to speak at the conference give their pitch about the topic they wish to speak on. Once the pitches are done, everyone votes and the attendees set the conference. Wikipedia says of it’s origins:

The name “BarCamp” is a playful allusion to the event’s origins, with reference to the hacker slang term, foobar: BarCamp arose as a spin-off of Foo Camp, an annual invitation-only participant driven conference hosted by open source publishing luminary Tim O’Reilly.

CLT Blog will be broadcasting BarCamp live online today over at cltblog.com/live.

Get ready for Barcamp next weekend

Barcamp 2

Barcamp Charlotte is fast approaching, and will again be held at Area Fifteen in NoDa on Saturday, October 17th at 9AM. This is a free event to attend, but the organizers are still looking for sponsors in order to make shirts and lunch free as well. Topics from the last Barcamp include Twitter, PR/journalism, social media, SEO, film making, Linux, and how to make money on the internet. From their website:

So whats going to happen?
Barcamp is a conference with content created by the attendees. This means that we don’t know who is going to speak before the day, because they are going to be coming as well, pitching their talks or discussions and then letting you decide. You won’t be hearing sponsored talked, or from people payed or paying to speak – in true democracy you will be deciding what sort of conference you want.

If you are new to Barcamp, check out our explanation of the reason behind Barcamp. Click here for a tentative schedule of events for this weekend’s Barcamp. You can also get a feel for Barcamp by checking out our photos from the last conference.

BarCamp Charlotte

Charlotte’s first BarCamp is this weekend, as most of you reading are already well aware. Saturday from 8am to 6pm, specifically. For those who haven’t heard, it’s a technology & media “unconference”, in that it’s organized by the participants the morning of the event, and there are no large sponsors allowed.

The event will be at Area 15 in NoDa (map).

The idea in a nutshell is that traditional conferences seem to be lacking in effectiveness. Many people spend thousands of dollars to attend a big conference like SXSW, FoWA, etc., only to come back saying something along the lines of “I had a great time, met some great people, but the content itself was lacking”.

BarCamp looks to change that. For more information about the event, and to see what’s being discussed already, head over the barcampcharlotte.org. If you’ve already signed up but are debating whether or not to go, let this be the push you need in the right direction!

However, for those who cannot go, we will be streaming live video throughout the day. Visit our Live page during the conference for video and discussion.

The BarCamp model has been around for a few years now since it started in California, but Charlotte’s BarCamp deviates slightly by the addition of a non-profit & charity jam session following the end of the conference. Representative from local organizations in need of tech/web/graphic/etc. work are invited to present their needs, and a crowd of supportive and knowledgeable BarCampers will be there to lend a hand, or at least get them pointed in the right direction.

All of CLT Blog’s primary contributers will be there, participating and streaming video. We hope to see you there too!
