South End

active 1 year, 2 months ago

The South End has its beginning in the 1850′s with Charlotte’s first railroad line, connecting the Queen City to Columbia and Charleston, SC. As time passed a thriving manufacturing community sprang up along the tracks, centered on the booming textile industry. The industrial area declined during the 1970s and 1980s, only to be revived in the early 1990s as restaurants, shops, and design-related industries discovered the old mills and warehouses.

Wednesday, May 12th is the scheduled demolition date for Old No. 2, Charlotte’s oldest standing fire station.

So Old No. 2’s Facebook Group has scheduled an EVENT, TUESDAY, MAY 11, 6PM.
    GROUP PHOTO at
    Old Fire Station No. 2
    1212 South Blvd., Charlotte, 28203
(right next to the BIG PINK MIRRORED CONDO HIGHRISE/NIKKO in SouthEnd/Dilworth)

Please RSVP so we have an idea of how WIDE the lens needs to be! (email me at wilyoat@mac.com)

Come on down to show your support and claim your BRICK because that is all that might be left of Charlotte’s oldest standing fire station come WEDNESDAY. I’ll have a pad of sticky notes so you can be sure you mark that special BRICK just for you! Ok I don’t really have the authority to give away bricks after the demo, but I’M MAKING A POINT HERE!

Hey, I’ll donate MINE to the Mayor who never EVER answered a single letter.

I’d really love to meet the people who have been so supportive of this cause and those who signed the petition. We have truly STIRRED IT UP behind the scenes. I hope this last stand will do the trick.

Not only does Historic Old Fire Station No. 2 have a bulldozer artfully staged in front of it, but a banner that says ”Save the Firehouse” has recently been added to the facade. Charlotte’s oldest fire station is a hot topic and getting hotter. May 12 is the ”scheduled” demolition date. Please sign the online petition and join the more than 6000 members of the facebook group. We are urging the City, the present Owner of the Fire Station and the Historic Landmarks Commission to find a solution that will allow Old No. 2 to stand.
