Are you ready for November 4th? As somewhat of a newbie to North Carolina and having procrastinated on getting my voting registration all taken care of until this election, I was clueless as to what my voting district was. So I thought I’d share what I found. The Mecklenburg County Board of Elections website is quite handy. Their site provides a place for you to search for your district and download a PDF of a sample ballot so that you know what will be on the ballot (there’s more than just the presidential candidates) before you hit up the polls.

Also make sure that if you’re voting straight party the ticket does not include the President and judges. You have to vote separately for President and for the judges.

If you’re not able to make it on the 4th, Early Voting has started and continues through November 1st. Check out the times and locations available courtesy of the Observer. Or you can request an absentee ballot if you are going to be out of town or just don’t feel like going anywhere. Also for all the news from Presidential, State and County elections check out the Charlotte Observer’s Guide or follow Observer’s election news on Twitter.

One of my very first visits ever to Charlotte was during the Taste of Charlotte event. The friend whom I was visiting and I hit up Tryon Street to see hundreds of people who had come out to eat, drink, and enjoy live music in the center of the city. The smells and sounds were intoxicating! So whether you’re a native, a newbie, or just visiting, next weekend’s Taste of Charlotte will be a fun way to check out the sights and sounds of our Queen City.

date: June 6-8
time: 11am-11pm (Sunday until 6pm)

Check out the lineup for the center stage, which will be set up right in the middle of Tryon Street. But don’t spend all of your time there. Usually there are lots of things going on, including street performers, dancing, and magicians who come out to showcase their talent. There’s no cost for admission, but of course bring a few dollars to try the various restaurants and vendors at their tents. Taste of Charlotte was one of the many things that hooked me into falling in love with the unique culture that the Queen City has to offer. I hope it will do the same for you.

Visit the Taste of Charlotte website for more information.

Jimmy Buffett hit the Queen City this past Tuesday, and Charlotteans came out to tailgate before the show. It was great. I wish I had more photos but, thanks to the security folks, I was unable to get my camera into the amphitheater. (Next time I’ll be sure to bring a smaller camera.)

But to me the true event was the tailgating itself. It was cold, but that didn’t stop the pirates and parrotheads from coming! There’s nothing like an actual cheeseburger in paradise before hearing some island music. There were tiki bars, pirate flags flying, and rum flowing! I uploaded a few shots here on Flickr that I took in between my own tailgating. If you’d like to check it out, they’re also embedded below. My only regret: I didn’t see one person dressed up as a parrot! So sad.
