New in town: Charlotte’s Drive-In

Posted on 9 May 2010 by Melissa Fortune

From @Kyphi, I received a tweet this weekend:

…there’s a drive in movie on Tyvola & S.tryon…they’re currently showing Ironman2!!! When did that open???”

After a quick phone call I got the details and headed out.

Following are a few pics but lighting was not the best. I will definitely follow up in the daylight but in the spirit of sharing, here’s the deets:

Name: Charlottes Drive In
Days/Hours: Thurs — Sun 7pm — 1am
Currently Showing:
1st show — Iron Man 2
2nd show — How To Train Your Dragon
Cost: Adults $7, Children: $5
Concessions: Yes, $

Check out their website (under construction) and Twitter account @CLTDriveIn. You can also buy tickets online.

Tips:

I came to the second show so I didn’t get there until 11:15pm. Yesterday (5÷8÷10) was day two of their opening; per Jason they were still working out a few kinks. I didn’t see any kinks. There is a consession stand, decently stocked. The sound is picked up on 88.1 FM and sounded clear through car speaker. The screen was large and clear, looked standard movie size. The ‘parking’ was to be expected for a drive in; located on the corner of Tyvola & South Tryon, in grass lot in front Morning Storage building. I saw several CMPD officers on duty.

The only suggestion I have is arrive early once awareness builds. I predict heavy summer traffic.

This is great, Charlotte actually used to have a Drive-In many, many MANY years ago. I remember my parents taking me to see Airplane and Friday the 13th.…long time ago. Maybe even Jaws.…fun times. The closest one to Charlotte is Belmont Drive-In. I will definately check this one out! Thanks!

    Just read this review :(

City officials are investigating a new drive-in movie theater that was illegally operating this weekend in southwest Charlotte.

Code Enforcement Manager Walter Abernathy says a notice of violation was issued to developer Afshin Ghazi, who owns the property at Tyvola Road and South Tryon Street.

Ghazi, the owner and developer of the EpiCentre mixed-use center uptown, is also the owner of the theater, Abernathy says.

    Ghazi was unavailable for comment.

Screenings were held this weekend on the vacant lot where Ghazi had once planned to develop a retail center. The site isn’t zoned for a movie theater.

Ghazi filed to rezone the property to commercial use from a residential designation in 2008, but the request was indefinitely deferred.

Abernathy says he’s checking on whether Ghazi has a business license for the theater or if he filed any plans with the city.

Usually, when you break the law, you don’t advertise,” Abernathy says. “We went out there on a Friday and issued a violation on the spot.”

Abernathy says another violation was issued Monday.

Radio ads have been played that promote the drive-in: it even has a website at charlottesdrivein.com.

Mobile drive-ins are fairly unique,” Abernathy says. “”The question is: is it a permitted use?”

Abernathy says a meeting will be scheduled with Ghazi’s lawyers regarding the violations.

You know, this city, and all citys, what a bunch of crap. A simple, fun family thing like a drive in and they want to hassel on a code violation. But accused cop killer’s may avoid the death penalty via twisting a a stupid law by attorneys and we can’t stop that.
