Discovery Place invited Charlotte’s indie media to its first Bloggers’ Open House yesterday for a little exploring and creating.
Logan Stewart, Discovery Place’s Manager of Marketing and Public Relations, welcomed us with an introduction, talking about the family-friendly experience Discovery Place offers through its exhibits and IMAX theater geared toward all ages. They pride themselves on their focus on education and science, and want to be a resource not only for the community to learn and ask questions about but also for the Charlotte media.
Stewart welcomed blog ideas, questions and collaborative ideas highlighting the purpose of the day being to open a line of communication with the Charlotte blogging scene.
After the introduction, we were free to explore and get our hands dirty!
Thier current exhibition is Mummies of the World, which offers a look into the mummies of Asia, South America, Oceania, Europe and ancient Egypt. The exhibit begins in a room with walls covered in black fabric and small spotlights, a quick film, and photos previewing what is to come. The dark, haunting atmosphere continues throughout the exhibit which highlights rare artifacts and mummies.
The exhibit gave me an escape from the real world, and took me on a journey through the history, culture, and civilizations that left these magnificent artifacts behind.
Mummies of the World runs through April 8, 2012.
