BarCamp Charlotte

Posted on 23 Jan 2009 by Justin Ruckman

Charlotte’s first BarCamp is this weekend, as most of you reading are already well aware. Saturday from 8am to 6pm, specifically. For those who haven’t heard, it’s a technology & media “unconference”, in that it’s organized by the participants the morning of the event, and there are no large sponsors allowed.

The event will be at Area 15 in NoDa (map).

The idea in a nutshell is that traditional conferences seem to be lacking in effectiveness. Many people spend thousands of dollars to attend a big conference like SXSW, FoWA, etc., only to come back saying something along the lines of “I had a great time, met some great people, but the content itself was lacking”.

BarCamp looks to change that. For more information about the event, and to see what’s being discussed already, head over the barcampcharlotte.org. If you’ve already signed up but are debating whether or not to go, let this be the push you need in the right direction!

However, for those who cannot go, we will be streaming live video throughout the day. Visit our Live page during the conference for video and discussion.

The BarCamp model has been around for a few years now since it started in California, but Charlotte’s BarCamp deviates slightly by the addition of a non-profit & charity jam session following the end of the conference. Representative from local organizations in need of tech/web/graphic/etc. work are invited to present their needs, and a crowd of supportive and knowledgeable BarCampers will be there to lend a hand, or at least get them pointed in the right direction.

All of CLT Blog’s primary contributers will be there, participating and streaming video. We hope to see you there too!
