Trump Charlotte

Posted on 29 Apr 2008 by Justin Ruckman

These renderings appeared today in the printed program for the Wachovia Championship, as well as on trumpcharlotte.com and Little’s website.

Will it be built? Is it just another rendering of the same old plan that was recently put on hold? Maybe all of the above.

The original Trump proposal was planned around the Tryon-Stonewall-College street block, but discerning observers at UrbanPlanet.org note that, based on these renderings, the site appears to be in the space created by the current realignment of I-277 around South Blvd.

Even further: early captures of the renderings from the Trump Charlotte website this morning show the Westin building, which is adjacent to the new plots of land, and whose presence has since been removed from the current renderings online.

Surely that’s a lot of work just for a website that complements an ad in a program for a golf tournament. Obviously it’s all speculation, but with a freshly acquired location and a poignant ad during a high-profile local golf tournament, things are looking pretty good for Trump Charlotte.

Read more about the I-277 restructuring and see pictures of the newly created plots of land at UrbanPlanet.org.

They might have removed the Westin on their site because it could detract from their brand. I think Trump has the mindset they they are the only ones and that might be why the renderings lack a skyline.

But then why was it even there in the first place? And why go to the trouble after the fact to remove it on the first day? For something that isn’t going to exist?

I think they are probably completely on hold with this projects, as rumored, but the ad was put out there probably at least a month ago, maybe 2 or 3. They might as well test the waters and see what the interest is. Removing the Westin from the skyline? no clue, but it looks tiny in that shot. Is the scale right? What is the proposed height of this project?

^^ that’s a wicked video. Also I just found this PDF that gives a really good overview of the 277 restructuring.

I think the scale of Trump & Westin is right — some rumors have Trump being taller than Atlanta’s BoA. And the Westin is several blocks behind so it would look smaller.

Maybe they removed the locational context just so there wouldn’t be any rampant speculation like what I’m doing now, who knows. They could be considering a number of spots and don’t want to tie the design to any one.

yeah that pdf really helps. i honestly wasn’t completely sure what all the work was for, but it looks much more pedestrian and new dev friendly

that video is pretty good. anyone know who put it together?

That video was sweet. I do think its funny though when cities advertise themselves. Makes me giggle. But the vision they had was amazing. Shows where Charlotte might be in a decade or so.

Looks like my rampant speculation was at least partially right, Trump Charlotte’s website has updated and now says “coming soon” and has a lot more details about the project’s composition.
