The Culture Initiative, a local art non-profit, held their “Cake+2″ show at Dharma Lounge last Saturday night. 100+ works from over fifty local artists were displayed at the event, including Bridgit Scheide, Nic Rummel, Nigel Esser, Kit Thomas, and local favorite, John Hairston, Jr. The show was a celebration of the organization’s 2 years in Charlotte. Started in 2008 by Joel Tracey & Arthur Brothers, the Culture Initiative’s goal is to bring a higher awareness of the local cultural community. “We are pushing to strengthen not only our local community but also the Mid-Atlantic region, by bringing artists together on events, gallery showcases, and challenges to influence and inspire one another.” says Tracey.
Despite the cold weather, there was quite a high turnout. Inside the atmosphere was relaxed thanks to live music by the Cement Stars, and smooth tunes spun by DJs Kev Kev, D Billawackers, Dick Tracey & Arthur Bros.
Dharma Lounge was truly a great venue for the event. Besides being the host for their previous successful anniversary event, it was the perfect size for guests and artists to mingle together, while providing the chance to admire the wonderful works on display. Several pieces of high quality local art were bought that night. Out on the patio, chilly onlookers watched nearby as Hairston worked on one of his newest pieces live. A chance to see one of Charlotte’s best talents at work was something many onlookers couldn’t pass up, even with the cold temperatures.
All-in-all, “Cake+ 2″ gave people an opportunity to be truly inspired and a look into something that many people take for granted in Charlotte: The vast amount of positive, creative energy that is present in the city. That is something that can’t be measured or faked. And with many more events like this one, it won’t be long until everyone is aware of that.
