The future of uptown retail

Posted on 24 Apr 2008 by Justin Ritchie

Charlotte Center City Partners released an amazing new vision of Uptown retail at their annual Vision Awards. As the vision emphasizes a drastically different new look for shopping in the Center City, our streets would go from stark to spectacular. The addition of EpiCenter and other non-business components to uptown — like residential towers — will already bring life to Charlotte’s heart, but drastic changes like these are more than welcome.

Slightly off-topic but did you read the article in CL, “Diary of a CATS Rider”? Very eye-opening, especially having never used public transit myself. There are things downtown already that I wouldn’t mind checking out, but am afraid of riding light rail and the buses, especially with a baby, and I hear parking downtown is crazy.

Parking uptown is easy as long as you park in one of the decks and don’t mind walking a few blocks. 7th St. Station is a sure bet.

I have seen many mothers on the light rail. Most the time they just roll in the stroller and people get out the way. Use the stroller at a ramming device, does wonders.

Nah, can’t bring myself to run over anyone with the stroller ;) But I do love when people watch me struggle with doors, though I’ve gotten better about maneuvering with bags, the stroller, etc. and doors.

7th St. Station… where is that in relation to CPCC?

Park at ImaginOn (entrance on 6th, I beleive). Self-validation at the front desk, good for 1.5 hrs. Awesome stuff to do & see there with kids of all ages. But, I must admit, I’ve parked there when headed elsewhere…

I got some pics of Epicenter (and ImaginOn and a buncha other stuff) on my lunchtime walk yesterday: http://tinyurl.com/4dh644

Nice pictures — yeah, who needs fountains, open seating spaces, and wide sidewalks. Let the masses push & shove in the streets. Seriously — come see these spaces at lunch on a wednesday, then imagine them transformed into these images. Where will the people go? If not into the street, then perhaps back inside the overstreet mall?

    Insane vision.
